Adam Ray · Volleyball coach in Huntington Beach, California
If you are looking for the best volleyball lessons in Huntington Beach, I coach one-on-one sessions built around your goals right on the sand by the Pier. I am Adam Ray, and for 8 years I have helped players build strong fundamentals that translate to tryouts, club, and confident play on the beach.
What Makes A Great Volleyball Lesson In Huntington Beach
A great lesson here starts with reading the beach. Huntington Beach Pier gives us consistent sand depth, reliable court spacing, and a true ocean breeze that challenges footwork, ball control, and serve accuracy. I use that environment to teach the fundamentals that hold up under pressure: clean passing platforms, balanced setting, efficient footwork into approach, and simple serving mechanics you can repeat even when the wind picks up.
My coaching is fundamentals-first. Whether you are brand new or polishing skills for a team, I build your session around what will help you perform sooner: a focused skill block, a small habit we can fix right away, and a clear drill you can repeat between lessons.
Where I Coach: Huntington Beach Pier
I teach at Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, California. The Pier area lets us adjust quickly as the day changes, from calmer morning air to afternoon cross-breezes. That variety matters. Players learn to square their hips in the wind, control platform angles on float serves, and use the sand to feel balance through the entire movement.
Being right at the Pier also keeps things efficient: easy to find, consistent conditions, and a setting that helps you focus. If you are coming from Downtown or nearby neighborhoods, it is a straightforward meet-up, and we can get straight into your goals.
Who My Lessons Are For
Players preparing for school or club tryouts who want targeted reps on passing, serving, and defensive positioning.
Athletes transitioning from indoor to beach who need help adjusting approach steps, timing, and hand shapes for outdoor setting.
Beginners who want a confident, step-by-step start without picking up bad habits.
Recreational players who want reliable serves, cleaner first contacts, and smarter court movement.
Since I started coaching, my students have made the teams they tried out for. That reflects how we work: identify the one or two fundamentals that unlock more of your game, then drill them with purpose. As Edward shared, “After only a few sessions she was confident and ended up making her team!”
What We Do In A 60-Minute Private Session
Every session is one hour and centered on your goals. A typical structure looks like this:
Quick check-in and warm-up: A few minutes to assess how your body feels and what you want out of today. Light movement to get the hips and shoulders ready for the sand.
Ball control foundation: Controlled reps on platforms and overheads to lock in angles, contact point, and footwork rhythm. Simple cues, high-quality touches.

Volleyball coach in Huntington Beach, California
Hey everyone! My name is Adam and I coach volleyball. The focus of my coaching is working on the fundamentals and building your skills from there. I have had great success in my coaching experience. Since I started coaching, all my students have made their teams they tried out for! In volleyball, fundamental skills are key to finding success so my lessons are built around your goals, whether you are starting from zero or working on the next level and
emphasizing the basics.
Skill focus block: One area at a time, like serve consistency to zones, setting footwork and hand shape, or approach mechanics into a more efficient arm swing.
Applied game reps: We put the refined skill into a realistic pattern: receive-to-set, dig-to-transition, or serve-to-defense. Conditions at the Pier help you read wind and trajectory.
Short recap: You leave with one or two clear takeaways and a couple of easy at-home or at-the-beach drills.
The goal is not a cram session. It is steady, well-sequenced progress so your fundamentals hold up when the ball, the wind, or the nerves change.
How I Teach Fundamentals On The Beach
Passing: We build a consistent base first. I coach a quiet platform, simple shin and shoulder alignment, and contact timing that keeps the ball on your midline. On windier days, you learn to angle earlier and trust a smaller movement.
Setting: We clean up stance, footwork into the ball, and a repeatable hand shape. I emphasize balance through your core so sets hold their line even when the breeze pushes.
Serving: We keep the toss compact and consistent. I teach a smooth, flat contact for a reliable float serve and how to adjust your line when the wind is across-court.
Hitting and approach: We simplify steps and spacing in the sand to get you into a balanced plant. The focus is on timing, posture through the swing, and tooling high hands with control rather than forcing power.
Defense and reading: We learn to read hips and shoulders, then set an early angle in the sand. You feel the difference between reacting and truly reading the hitter’s cues.
These are the same basics I return to with everyone, from a new player to someone chasing a more competitive role. As Parker put it, “Coach Adam helped me hone in on my setting skills, serving, hitting, and defense.”
How Many Lessons Do You Need To See Results?
Most players feel a difference in their first session because we remove extra movement and give you one or two simple cues. Real consistency takes reps, and that is why I keep things focused: a narrow skill block, direct feedback, and applied drills. If you are preparing for tryouts, plan a short run of focused sessions leading into your dates. If you want to build an all-around beach game, we will progress skill by skill and layer in game reads.
Are These The Best Volleyball Lessons In Huntington Beach For Tryouts?
If you are aiming at a school or club team, our sessions target what coaches watch first: serve consistency, first-contact control, communication, and footwork that holds up when you are tired. We will script tryout-style patterns, simulate pressure with simple constraints, and practice recovery from mistakes. Aleena said it simply: “Helped my daughter make both her middle school and club team.” That is the outcome we work for.
Pricing: How Much Do Volleyball Lessons Cost In Huntington Beach?
My standard private rate is $85 per lesson. I also offer a 60-minute private lesson option at $55. Both are one-on-one, and both are built around your goals with the fundamentals-first approach I described above. If you are unsure which to choose, we can talk through your goals and timeline to match the session to what you need.
What To Expect At The Pier: Wind, Sand, And Timing
Huntington Beach Pier offers consistently playable sand and the kind of steady breeze that makes you better, fast. Morning sessions are usually calmer and great for precise technical work. Afternoons can bring a livelier cross-wind, which is perfect for practicing platform angles, float serves that hold their line, and approach control when the ball drifts. We will use whatever the day gives us so your game translates anywhere.
Real Results From Local Players
I keep the focus on growth you can feel and coaches can see. Here are a few short notes from students and parents:
“After only a few sessions she was confident and ended up making her team!”, Edward
“Helped me hone in on my setting skills, serving, hitting, and defense. I also made my high school team!”, Parker
“Helped my daughter make both her middle school and club team.”, Aleena
Across public reviews, I hold a 5-star average across 5 reviews. I share that to highlight consistency: simple, clear fundamentals applied in a real beach environment.
How I Recommend Practicing Between Lessons
Ball control mini-sets: Ten short, clean forearm reps, then ten overhead reps, focusing on angle and soft hands. Repeat for a few rounds.
Serve routine: Pick a target, keep your toss low and consistent, and log your makes. Focus on a flat, solid contact.
Footwork ladders in the sand: Small, balanced movements to reinforce posture and quicker first steps.
Wall touches: If you have a safe spot, use gentle forearm bumps to a target on a wall to build platform feel.
Short, frequent practice sessions beat long, occasional ones. We will pick two that fit your week.
Is This The Best Fit If You Are Brand New To Volleyball?
Yes, because we strip the game down to a couple of controllable habits and build from there. You will learn how to form a consistent platform, set with quiet hands, keep a simple serve toss, and move in balance in the sand. We avoid jargon and emphasize feel, so your first real rally feels under control instead of rushed. Being at Huntington Beach Pier helps because you can see and feel progress quickly: the sand forces efficiency, and the breeze gives instant feedback on angle control.
Will These Lessons Help If You Usually Play Indoors?
Absolutely. We adapt your indoor mechanics without rewriting your whole game. For passers, we tighten your base and angle control in the wind. For setters, we focus on balance through the core and repeatable hand placement. For hitters, the big shift is spacing and tempo into the sand plant. You leave with adjustments that carry back indoors: cleaner posture, better timing, and smarter shot selection.
